Potato supply to Valley goes up

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, AUG 09 -
The supply of potato to Kathmandu has gone up significantly. According to figures obtained from the Kalimati wholesale market, up to 250 tonnes of potatoes are entering Kathmandu each day. Normally, the daily supply fluctuates between 70-80 tonnes.

Tulsi Das Gautam, executive director of the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market Development Board, said that the supply of potato has soared following a steep rise in the price of green vegetables. “Demand for potato has increased as green vegetables have become dearer,” he added.

According to Gautam, prices also fell due to the import of potatoes from India, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Nepal imports 136 tonnes of potatoes from India and 34 tonnes from Bhutan every day. Imports from Bangladesh have also started. About 22 tonnes of potatoes were imported from Bangladesh on Sunday, according to Gautam.

Potato imports from China are also likely during the festive season of Dashain and Tihar, said Gautam. Nepal imported 100 truckloads of potatoes from China last year, he added.
