TERHATHUM, AUG 09 -
The National Rhododendron Conservation and Management Committee (NRCMC), an organization working for the conservation of rhododendrons and biodiversity, has initiated a campaign to promote agro tourism to support Nepal Tourism Year (NTY) 2011.

Launched with the slogan “Agro forest for agro tourism”, the campaign has been targeted at more than two dozen village development committees (VDCs) in Terhathum, Sankhuwasabha and Taplejung. Laxman Tiwari, coordinator of the committee, said the project was started with a grant from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). “We plan to double the inflow of domestic and foreign tourists to the designated places through the project,” he said.

He added that the campaign would also generate employment at the local level in addition to ensuring increased turnout of tourists. “We have started agro tourism to add value to our campaign for tourists,” he said. “All the regions that the campaign covers are above 1,700 m altitudewise.”

The VDCs on the campaign trail lie along the expedition routes to the Kumbhakarna, Makalu and Kanchenjunga mountains. The committee has encouraged farmers to abstain from the use of chemical fertilizers. It has distributed saplings of Napier grass, chillies, cauliflower, leafy vegetables and radishes to every farmer in the VDCs.

According to an NRCMC source, it has distributed both annual and perennial plants to the farmers. The project

has encouraged organic farming which is aligned to preserving the environment, the source added.
