Tamakoshi chief takes charge
KATHMANDU, AUG 08 -
The 456-MW Upper Tamakoshi Hydro Electricity Project (UTHEP), the country’s largest hydropower project, is likely to pick up the pace as the government has appointed a new Executive Director (ED) to commission the project more effectively.
The project worth Rs 35.29 billion is ready to start major civil construction works from this year and is expected to complete by year 2015.
As per the ministerial-level decision made on June 30, 2010 and approval from the Ministry of Local Development recently, the Ministry of Energy on Friday appointed Arjun Kumar Karki, currently serving as joint-secretary at Ministry of Environment as ED of Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Limited (UTHL) for the next four years.
Former Managing Director (MD) of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Karki was among the officials who lobbied for the construction of Upper Tamakoshi project located in Dolakha district by mobilising local expertise and resources.
Meanwhile, Karki has been directed to submit the monthly progress report of the project to the ministry, said Shankar Prasad Koirala, secretary at MoE. The appointment will help to implement and facilitate all high level decisions in construction phase.
The UTHEP is likely to start construction this year after being delayed for more than a year owing to fund crunch. About a week ago, Employees’ Provident Fund, one of the largest lenders for the project, UTHL and NEA signed a tripartite loan agreement to facilitate the construction of the country’s largest projects.
Meanwhile, the NEA has signed an agreement with Sino Hydro Limited, contractor from China for the major civil construction works few days ago. The project is being viewed as a major one that could help solve the problem of
load-shedding in the country.
