Count us all, say Dalits
KATHMANDU, AUG 08 -
Dalit representatives have demanded proper count of their population in the upcoming census so that they can draft proper policies for the upliftment of the community.
In an event organised by the Dalit NGO Federation on Sunday, they demanded inclusion of experts from the community in the team of 85 district census officers, 350 unit supervisors and 34,000 enumerators to be mobilised by the Central Bureau of Statistics for the census. “The inclusion of Dalits in the census can enable the people of the community to disclose their real caste, clan and other details without any inhibition,” said Hira Bishwakarma, president of the Dalit Studies Development Centre. “It can ultimately ensure accuracy in the overall data that can be a basis for policy making.”
Due to social oppression, many Dalits are changing their surnames, which they said, is one of the challenges in tracing their true identity.
