Union padlocks cigarette factory
HETAUDA, AUG 08 -
A Maoist-affiliated workers union at Gorkha Lahari on Sunday closed the factory accusing the management of plotting to fire its workers in the manhandling case of two company staff.
Factory workers had beaten up production manager Krishna Rawal and factory manager Mir Ahmad Sakil on July 22.
The Maoist-affiliated All Nepal Industrial Workers Association said that it had been forced to shutter the company as the management was unnecessarily asking for clarification from workers who were not involved in the case. Maoist-affiliated factory workers were repeatedly asked for clarification by the management.
Navaraj Bidari, president of the All Nepal Industrial Workers Association, said that they would continue the agitation until the management withdraws the charge against its member workers. He claimed that the factory workers were not involved in the manhandling case. However, the management claimed that the factory workers beat up the managers. There are 236 workers in the factory. The factory produces Gorkha, Gold Flake and Sahara cigarettes.
