Maoists to seek Indian response
KATHMANDU, AUG 07 -
A meeting of UCPN (Maoist) office bearers on Saturday decided to seek an official response from Indian officials on the alleged death threat issued by an Indian Embassy official to the party’s Central Committee member and lawmaker Ram Kumar Sharma.
After the fourth round of prime ministerial election on Friday, Sharma had said he was being threatened over telephone by a consular at the Indian Embassy for what he said was lobbying for Madhes-based lawmakers to vote for Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal in the prime ministerial election.
Sharma had also said the caller also warned him that his daughter, an 11th grader at Kendriya Vidhalaya run by the Indian government, would be removed from the school.
Maoist Vice-Chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha said the office bearers’ meeting concluded that the threat to the lawmaker has “tarnished the nation’s image and drawn the party’s serious attention.
“The embassy should probe the incident and make its views public,” Shrestha said after the meeting. “We have also decided to draw the government’s attention. To disrespect a lawmaker is to disrespect the parliament.” However, the allegation was denied by Indian Embassy Spokesman Apoorva Srivastava.
Meanwhile, speaking at the Reporters’ Club earlier the same day, UCPN (Maoist) Secretary C.P. Gajurel said his party would investigate the issue and write to the Indian government to call back the consular if he refuses to apologise.
