SAARC university courses to start
KATHMANDU, AUG 07 -
Finally, the first academic session of the much-talked SAARC University is beginning on Aug. 26 inside the premises of Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.
Nepal has two seats this year in Master in Information Communi-cation Technology and Development Economic. However, no confirmation is received whether Nepali students are enrolled or not. Tuition fee has been fixed at US$ 440 per semester.
According to sources, Nepal has to chip in US$ 0.065 million for its two students in the first year. The university would also start offering degrees in engineering and medicine in the years ahead.
Nepal has to contribute US$ 2.95 million to operate the university to run its five-year academic session.
Pakistan and Afghanistan had decided to agree on establishing the university, but yet to ratify the decision. The first session of the varsity will begin with 50 students. India has committed the largest contribution of US$ 34.420 million to the university whose operational cost will be shared by the eight member countries.
The plan is also to make the university an institute of South Asian studies, which is expected to become a premier think tank, focusing on issues and challenges facing South Asia, said Chief Executive Officer of the university Prof. GK Chadha.
Meanwhile, due to the protracted political deadlock, Nepal could not confirm its participation in the SAARC finance minister’s jamboree slated to begin from August 24 in Thimpu, Bhutan.
“Other seven member states have already forwarded and confirmed their participation, but we could not,” an official said.
