Flesh trade booming in Banke

RAJENDRA NATH

AUG 07 -
Banke is the district with the largest number of sex workers in the Mid Western region, a report shows.

According to a recent study carried out by the Community Health Institute, an NGO, some 1,000 girls and women in Banke have taken up prostitution as an occupation. The institute puts the number of regular sex clients at 22,000. Tilak Prasad Sharma of the institute said a majority of the sex workers were driven to the profession out of poverty. “Some of them are single mothers who adopted the profession to feed and school their children,” he said. A large number of sex workers in Banke are from impoverished parts of the country, mostly lured by false promises. The women run a high risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. “We are counseling them about safe sex,” said Ganeshraj Bhatta, monitoring officer at the institute.
