India’s special envoy wraps up visit

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, AUG 06 -
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s special envoy Shyam Saran wrapped up his three-day visit here. Saran flew to New Delhi on Friday where he will apprise the Indian prime minister of the latest political developments in Nepal.

Before flying to the Indian capital, Saran visited the Pashupatinath Temple where he offered prayers and also met a priest of Indian origin there. On Tuesday, he was appointed as the Indian Prime Minister’s special envoy to Nepal.

Also a former Indian ambassador to Nepal, Saran refused to speak to media

persons assembled at the Tribhuvan International Airport on Friday afternoon. He said he did not want to make comments as he was in a hurry. He also held a meeting with President Dr Ram Baran Yadav on Friday.

“We discussed bilateral and contemporary issues,” Saran said of his meeting with the president.

The Indian side has remained silent on Saran’s trip with no official communication released about the outcome of the visit and meetings with leaders here.

Officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also kept tightlipped on Saran’s meeting with the President and Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal. During his stay here, Saran also held talks with Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and three of his deputies at Dahal’s residence at Nayabazar.

Saran also held separate meetings with senior leders of other political parties, including Acting President of Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala and CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal.

Saran expressed deep concern over the delay in the

peace process and statute Safe abortion a far cry

drafting and urged the leaders to put the two issues on their

top priority list while seeking consensus.
