Way smoothened for differently-abled

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, AUG 03 -
To make society aware of the importance of disabled-friendly infrastructure and enable the access of people with disabilities (PWDs) to public service centres, Independent Living Centre (CIL), an organisation of people with disabilities, has built ramps in five public institutions.

The Australian Embassy under its Direct Aid Programme funded the project implemented by CIL from December 2009 to June 2010.

“We built the ramps to convey the message that disabled-friendly infrastructure can be made at modest expense. All that is needed is the concerned authorities’ awareness and sensitivity towards the inclusion of people with disabilities,” said Tek Bahadur Gurung, the coordinator of the project.

Under the project, five slope ramps have been built at the main entrance of the Vice chancellor’s office building in Tribhuvan University (TU), the training building of Viswa Vasa Campus, General Post Office, Padmodaya High School and Patan Higher Secondary School. Also, twenty roadside curve ramps have been constructed at Kupondole, Thapathali, Tripureshor, Bhadrakali, Ratnapark and Bhrikuti Mandap with the approval of the concerned authorities. The sites were selected considering their utility and cost-effectiveness.

“I need not wait for anyone to take me to the classroom now. The ramp is a boon to me,” said Nanda Sunar, a seventh grader at Patan Higher Secondary School.

Earlier, CIL had held talks with the Department of Roads, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Tribhuwan International Airport, Office of the Council of Ministers and Prime Minister and several ministers in its drive to create barrier-free infrastructure. “This is the first time that any organisation of PWDs has built convenient infrastructure on its own initiative,” said CIL member Deepak KC.
