Nepal, Oberthur likely to sign MRP deal this week

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, AUG 03 -
Oberthur Technologies, the French company, which has bagged the Machine Readable Passport (MRP) contract, deposited five percent performance bond (US $ 28, 72000) of the total project cost on Tuesday.

The company had committed to provide 40,00,000 copies of passports at a cost of US $ 3.59 per copy till 2015.

“We have prepared all the papers to sign a deal with Oberthur. We are just waiting another verdict from the Supreme Court as two writ petitions had been lodged there and one verdict came in our favour. Most likely, the apex court will deliver its ruling in the pending case on Wednesday. That will decide our course,” a senior Foreign Ministry official told the Post.

Officials of the French company have already held a couple of rounds of talks with ministry officials.

“We are all ready and if the apex court verdict comes in our favour on Wednesday, we will sign the deal in the remaining two days of this week,” the official said.

According to the binding commitment, Oberthur should send the first consignment of the passports within 70 days after signing the deal with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
