Extortion terror grips Surkhet

POST REPORT

SURKHET, AUG 03 -
The business community in Surkhet is a terrified lot as an underground outfit has intensified it extortion drive in the district.

According to the Surkhet Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Himali Tarai Tigers Nepal, an obscure group, has been demanding huge amounts of money as ‘donation’ from businesspersons. Sending a letter signed by its district in-charge Raman Singh, the outfit has demanded between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 600,000 from each businessman.

As stated in the letter, the outfit has been collecting donation for the expansion of its organisation nationwide and intensifying its movement against ethnic states.

Laxman Basnet, a businessman, said the group sent him a letter demanding Rs. 80,000 a few days ago.

“They sent the letter first and threatened me over telephone,” he said.

Businessman Nawaraj Sharma said the same group had recently demanded Rs. 70,000 from him.

“It demands a huge sum of money first and reduces the amount later when we bargain,” he added. “It also threatened me several times. We are scared.”

Sharma said it was impossible for them to run their businesses in such a situation. The businessmen have demanded security for themselves.
