Koshi puts island settlement at risk

INARUWA, AUG 02 -
Rising water level in the Koshi River has put the island settlement of Srilanka here under flood risk.

Since Sunday, Koshi has started gushing into the Chiliya Tapu, damaging several houses and farmland, locals said. With floodwater just 100 metres away, the lives of over 2,000 people are at risk.

If the water level continues to rise, Chiliya Tapu will be submerged in a few days. “People are preparing to move to higher ground for safety,” a local said.

Srilanka Tapu residents have complained authorities concerned have taken no measures to protect the settlement. Police Inspector Rajendra Thapa said the water was too rough to navigate to the settlement for rescue work.

Sunsari Chief District Officer Ram Prasad Thapaliya said he was unaware of the danger. With the river all around, the residents here have no way out.
