8-hour power outage a day

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, AUG 02 -
Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) on Monday said power cut hours have gone up for a week from the current two hours a day to eight hours a day effective Monday.

According to the new schedule, there will be no power for four hours each in the morning and evening.

According to the chief of the Department of Systems Operation and Maintenance under the NEA, Sher Singh Bhat, the schedule had to be changed as the 144-MW Kali Gandaki ‘A’ (KGA) Hydro Electricity Project was shut down completely from Monday to carry out repair and maintenance work in one of the three turbines there.

The Kali Gandaki ‘A’ is the largest hydropower project of the country.

“The repair of one turbine needs complete shutdown of the whole power plant. As such, there is a shortage of 144 MW of electricity on the national grid,” Bhat said.

He, however, said that the repair work will be over in a week and the old schedule restored after that. The current power demand in peak hours is 850 MW to 880 MW while only around 650 MW to 680 MW was being supplied, including power imported from India, before the shutdown of the KGA.
