Upper Tamakoshi project to be complete by 2015
KATHMANDU, AUG 02 -
Work on the 456 MW Upper Tamakoshi Hydroelectricity Project (UTHEP) is slated to start in November and be completed in 2015.
Located in Dolakha district and priced at an estimated Rs. 35.29 billion, UTHEP is the first and largest hydropower project being built with domestic funding.
The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) on Sunday signed an agreement with Sino Hydro Corporation, China for the main civil construction of the project.
UTHEP project director Mrigendra Bahadur Shrestha and Sino Hydro’s designated attorney Lyang Feng signed the agreement worth Rs. 13.78 billion.
As per the agreement, the Chinese contractor will start the main civil construction work, including construction of a tunnel, dam and powerhouse, this November and complete it in the next four and a half years.
Meanwhile on Friday, the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), the NEA and Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower signed a tripartite loan agreement to speed up construction. The EPF has agreed to lend Rs. 10 billion as a long-term loan for the project.
Shrestha said that electro-mechanical and hydro-mechanical works would be conducted together after the completion of the civil construction work.
He added that the agreement included a provision under which the contractor would be penalised if the construction was not completed on time.
“But now we are confident that the project will be completed in the next five years,” said Shrestha.
