Cholera suspected in Nepalgunj

Janak Nepal

NEPALGUNJ, JUL 30 -
Health officials suspect that most of the patients admitted to health institutions in Nepalgunj with gastroenteritis-like symptoms may actually be suffering from cholera. Lab tests conducted by the Nepalgunj Medical College on Friday found cholera microbes in some of the stool samples.

Dr. Madhu Aryal said that four out of six samples tested positive for cholera. “The samples have been sent to Kathmandu for further tests and confirmation.”

Nepalgunj Medical College and Bheri Zonal Hospital continued to get inundated with patients suffering from stomach flu, many of them minors. Due to lack of space in the hospitals, many patients are receiving treatment on the floor.

The District Public Health Office (DPHO), Banke, is providing saline solution and other medication to the sick admitted in the hospital.

Meanwhile, a medical team dispatched from the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division in the Capital visited the disease-hit settlements, inspected the drinking water resources and gathered samples there.

The initial study conducted by the DPHO had concluded that the disease erupted due to the contamination of water resources during the flood that struck Nepalgunj two weeks ago. Even the water supplied by the Nepal Drinking Water Corporation was suspected of being contaminated.

“We’ve tested our water tanks and supply lines, but there are no impurities or any kind of contamination,” claimed Dipakjyoti Shakya, the chief of the corporation.
