Scores displaced by floods in Kailali
- Transport defunct in places
TIKAPUR, JUL 30 -
Floods triggered by a heavy downpour onto the Chure region
in southern Kailali have ravaged several settlements, displacing hundreds of families. There are no human casualties, though.
Rain since early Friday morning caused the streams originating in the Chure range to swell and flood nearby settlements. Chaumala, Ramshikharjhala, Khailad, Lalbojhi and Pahalmanpur VDCs have been badly hit. More than 100 houses—64 in Lalbojhi VDC alone—have been inundated. A large area of farmland has been lost to the disaster. The actual damages could not be immediately ascertained.
Rescue team, comprising Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Disaster Relief Committee and Nepal Red Cross Society, have evacuated the families. Meanwhile, rain continued from Thursday night has caused several roadside landslips in Salyan, crippling transport service. Gravelled roads have turned impassable. Scores of passengers have been stranded as a result, with many walking to
destinations having given up hope of early traffic resumption. Police said efforts were underway to clear the roads to resume service. Unabated rain has disrupted
transport service in most parts of Gulmi district as well.
Newly opened road tracks have been wrecked by mudslides. Commuters traversing the Ridi-Taksar road are required to change vehicles four times since no single vehicle can cover the whole length. With transport paralysed in Gulmi, prices of essentials have rocketed there. A dozen VDCs in neighbouring Baglung are also grappling with price hike.
