Govt gears up for VDC secys’ safety

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, JUL 30 -
The government has directed security agencies to make special security arrangements to VDC secretaries amid reports of their mass resignation in several districts in the last few months.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) took the decision on Friday in the presence of Home Secretary Govinda Kusum and chiefs of all the three national security agencies. The MoHA move comes on the heels of a request of the Ministry of Local Development after VDC secretaries resigned en masse over threats from criminal outfits across the country. MoHA has directed the security agencies to implement a five-point security scheme as soon as possible.

As per the new security arrangement, a meeting of the district security officials and representatives of political parties would assure VDC secretaries of their security and ask them to withdraw their resignation. Security chiefs of the respective districts would visit the secretaries’ workplace to ensure the implementation of the security scheme. Similarly, District Police Office will appoint a police inspector as a liaison officer to deploy the required security personnel immediately for secretaries’ security.

The meeting also decided to help secretaries work in groups if they felt insecure in the workplace, to provide individual police protection and to regularise police patrolling in the threat-prone areas.

However, VDC secretaries on Sunday demanded the government find out the groups creating insecurity in the villages instead of providing police protection. “Unless the terror elements are eradicated from the villages, we have decided not to work,” said Bhawani Prasad Ghimire, Chairperson of VDC Secretaries’ Welfare Protection Centre.
