YCL leader shot dead in Bara

PAWAN YADAV

BARA, JUL 29 -
An unidentified group shot dead an area in-charge of the Young Communist League (YCL)--the youth wing of UCPN (Maoist)--in Bara’s Prasurampur VDC-1 on Thursday morning.

The Ajad faction of the Samyukta Janatantrik Tarai Mukti Morcha, an underground outfit, owned up the killing.

Laxmi Narayan Yadav, an eyewitness, said a group of about nine men gunned down Kheshari Raut Ahir at around 1:30 a.m. Ahir, who is locally known as Rup Narayan, was the YCL Area No. 2 in-charge and district secretariat committee member of the Maoists.

The assailants shot Ahir while he was sleeping along with 10 others atop a house belonging to his neighbour, Jagat Prasad Yadav.

“The gunshot woke me up. I tried to snatch the attacker but he managed to flee as he fired at us,” said Laxmi, who had been sleeping alongside Ahir.

Police said investigation is underway. Four locals have been arrested in connection with the murder.

Talking to local journalists over telephone, district coordinator of the Morcha Bikram Singh said his party was behind the murder. The Maoist district leadership condemned the incident and demanded the government bring the guilty to book at the earliest. Maoist activists blocked traffic for four hours by keeping Ahir’s body in front of the District Administration Office. They demanded that the guilty be arrested at the earliest, the dead be declared a martyr and the victim’s family be given compensation.

A Maoist source told the Post that the local administration has agreed to provide Rs. 300,000 to the victim’s family within 15 days.
