- US military to probe scenario
KATHMANDU, JUL 28 -
The government’s lifting of the ban on Nepalis working in Iraq has come as a huge respite to more than 35,000 Nepali nationals already working in Iraq and who were on verge of facing deportation.
On Wednesday, the government fomally announced the lifting of the ban which was in slapped since 2006 after 12 Nepalis were massacred by Iraqi militants.
On July 20, American CENTCOM Contracting Command, an umbrella entity that coordinates labour force inside the US military presence inside Iraq had issued a notice to workers of those countries which have banned Iraq as a destination, to leave by August 9.
“After inputs from and dicussions with concerned authorities we finally decided it would be better to lift ban, and we did so for the sake of Nepalis already working in Iraq,” said Purna Chandra Bhattarai, Joint Secretary at Ministry of Labour and Transport Management (M oLTM).
“The safety of the workers was our priority. Without seeing the law and order situation we will not allow them to go there,” he said. “Proper criteria also will be followed.”
The MoLTM has also requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to stop stamping “Not valid in Iraq for work” on Nepali passports.
