‘Militants a major threat to Madhes’
BIRATNAGAR, JUL 26 -
Political party leaders and intellectuals have said the ever mushrooming underground groups in the Madhes should not be encouraged by recognising them as political forces.
Speaking at a programme on Monday, they said the Madhesi people have been suffering due to the violent activities of the armed groups despite their genuine demand for an autonomous Madhes state.
Joint Chairman of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) Jaya Prakash Gupta said that Madhes-based political parties have been sandwiched between the armed outfits and the unitary system of governance. “It is impossible to get justice from those who unleash violence,” he said, urging people not to recognise any armed group politically. Nepali Congress central leader Pradip Giri said the Tarai has two major problems, political and administrative.
Stating that he felt ashamed about the armed movement launched by his party in the past, Giri claimed the struggle would never have been positive for the rights of the people and the country. “There will be no end to violence in the country unless the political parties take people’s war, plane hijack and Jhapa insurrection as their glorious past,” he added.
Political analyst CK Lal said the southern plains are in the state of statelessness due to the increasing violence in the region. Human rights activist Sushil Pyakurel and UCPN (Maoist) central leader Ramrijhan Yadav also others spoke in the programme.
