Cop caught in gangs’ crossfire

PRADIP MEYANGBO

DHARAN, JUL 25 -
A police officer sustained bullet injury in a crossfire between two groups of youths that took place outside the Dental Department building of BP Koirala Institute for Health Sciences (BPKIHS) in Dharan on Saturday night.

Police said one of its officers, Sagar Magar, was caught in the crossfire between the two gangs, who were apparently vying to procure a construction contract announced by the BPKIHS. One of the gangs is affiliated to Federal Limbuwan State Council (FLSC), while the other represents the circle of former drug addicts, locally known as Recovering Group.

Eyewitnesses said more than 10 rounds were fired in the standoff. A bullet that ricocheted after hitting a rock struck Magar on his chest. Some bullets had hit and entered the nearby houses. No casualties occurred, though.

The battle ended after the locals took the matter into their own hands and chased the Recovering Group away.

The police found two kinds of bullets — one resembling that of Chinese pistol and the other that of Italian-made pistol — from the crime scene.

The dispute between the two gangs started when the Recovering Gang members seized a contract deal announced by the BPKIHS a few months earlier, snubbing the FLSC’s request for a fair dealing.
