Extortionists kill hotelier
KATHMANDU, JUL 24 -
A restaurateur was killed in broad daylight when an unidentified gang attacked him with bottles of beer and glasses in his own restaurant near Makhan area in the Capital on Saturday afternoon.
Police said the deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Krishna Shrestha, owner of Trishna Newari restaurant. He was a native of Kavre district.
According to Inspector Awadhesh Bista, in-charge of the Metropolitan Police Sector Janasewa, New Road, two youths who had reached there on a motorcycle started hitting Shrestha with beer bottles on his head after he declined to pay the ransom that they demanded.
The gang also attacked Shrestha’s wife Sita, tied her up and gagged her before fleeing. Sita was found unconscious and Shrestha was already
dead when the police reached the incident site. Police are yet to arrest the attackers.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the gangsters were not planning to murder the businessman as they had not brought any weapon with them.
“It must be the handiwork of small-time gangsters whose motive for the crime was money,” said Inspector Bista, adding that the gangsters were reportedly demanding over Rs. 100,000 from Shrestha.
Family sources told the police that the assailants used to extort the restaurateur time and again in the past. At the time of the murder, only Shrestha and his wife were there in the restaurant while the employees had gone for a bath, police said.
Police have detained held two employees on suspicion of their involvement in the murder. Shrestha’s body has been sent to TU Teaching Hospital for postmortem.
