Journos protest FM chief death
DANG, JUL 24 -
Media persons staged a demonstration at Tulsipur in Dang on Saturday. They were protesting the killing of Devi Prasad Dhital, the chairman of Community FM Radio Tulsipur.
The journalists took out a protest rally that later converged into a corner meet at BP Chowk after going around the marketplace.
Various professional organisations expressed solidarity with the programme organised by Mid-western Coordination Committee and Dang chapter of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ).
Speaking at the corner meet, FNJ central general secretary Poshan KC said the killing of media persons is on the rise due to the failure of the state to take action against the murderers. Dozens of media entrepreneurs and persons have killed in the past few years, but the government has not taken action on even a single case.
“Such impunity aids the killing of media persons. The sate has failed to ensure security to the press,” he said. He demanded the government probe the matter seriously and bring the guilty to book immediately.
An unidentified group of persons shot dead Dhital at Hemnagar in Urahari VDC-4 on Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, media organisations, major political parties and several professional organisatins have condemned the killing. District-based newspapers smeared black in their editorial columns to protest the incident. Similarly, Rapti Zonal Transportation Committee decided to halt its service for two hours on Sunday in the Rapti zone as a mark of protest against the killing.
FNJ team begins investigation
A three-member mission team of the FNJ central committee led by KC has started investigation into Dhital’s murder. The team met security officials, the victim’s family, local journalists and eye witnesses on Saturday. “We are still clueless. But it seems that the killing was a pre-meditated one,” said KC. He said the team will make public a report after the study very soon.
Meanwhile, the District Police Office said an investigation team led by DSP Laxman Giri has been formed to probe the killing. “Investigation is on,” district police chief Thakur Prasad Gyawali said. He said security has been beefed up in the district.
