Dang mourns journalist Dhital’s death

Marketplaces in Dang district were closed on Friday to mourn and protest the murder of Devi Prasad Dhital, chairman of Community FM Radio Tulsipur.
Local radio stations paid tributes to Dhital halting their regular programme for five minutes
and airing dirge tune, while private schools in Tulsipur area remained shut.
A huge public participation was witnessed at Dhital’s funeral cortege that started from his house at Tulsipur-6 and passed through various parts of the town before reaching the Babai River at Sitalpur, where Dhital was cremated. Meanwhile, Dang Police has empanelled a five-member squad led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Laxman Giri to probe Dhital’s murder.
“It is too soon to remark on the case without a thorough investigation,” said Dang’s Police Chief Thakur Prasad Gyawali. Dang Police is working closely with Rapti Zonal Police in the case. A manhunt has been instigated in and around Dang to nab Dhital’s murderers.
“We’re confident that the guilty will be netted,” claimed Rapti Zonal Police Chief Raj Bahadur Bista.
On Thursday evening, an unidentified group had gunned down Dhital outside the house of Guruprasad Acharya at Hemnagar of Urhari VDC-4.
Kanta Prasad Oli, who was with Dhital during the incident, escaped the incident unscathed. Shaken and stressed by the incident, Oli is currently in custodial care of the police.

Various organisations condemned the murder of Dang-based Tulsipur FM’s Chairman Devi Prasad Dhital (Hemraj) by an unidentified group at Urahari VDC, Dang, on Thursday night.
The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Freedom Forum and Press Union issued a press statement on Friday pointing to the government’s failure to provide security, growing impunity and insecurity of journalists in the country.
The FNJ on Friday formed and activated a three-member mission for the investigation of the case led by FNJ Secretary General Poshan KC.
Condemning the murder, Human Development and Peace Campaign (HUDEP)-Nepal demanded the arrest of Dhital’s killers and called for a to stop the series of violations of fundamental rights of the people. HUDEP also conveyed its condolences to Dhital’s kin and urged the government to compensate his family.
The Rastriya Jana Shakti Party and Nepal Medical Association’s press statement described Dhital’s murder as a “cowardly” act.
Meanwhile, the Home Ministry issued a statment expressing commitment to nab the killers. The ministry said security teams have been mobilized at district and regional levels. It said that an additional special police team has also been deployed by the police headquarters to facilitate the probe and hunt for the killers.
