Monsoon menace continues

Flood and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall wrought havoc in various parts of the country on Wednesday as well as displacing hundreds of families.
The District Police Office (DPO) Morang said that 719 houses were swept away in various parts of the district due to floods in local rivers and streams. The swollen Ratuwa stream inundated settlements at Mahadeva and Jhurkiya villages. The flooded Bakara, Keshaliya, Singhiya and Judi streams displaced scores of households as water entered settlements. The displaced people are taking shelter in local schools and other public places, police said.
Some 376 houses were swept away in Katahari VDC, Morang, as the swollen Lohandra stream entered the settlement. Around half-a-dozen industries in Katahari corridor halted operations due to waterlogging. “Massive chunks of property were destroyed in the industrial area due to flood,” said Sub-inspector Dhundi Pokharel.
Our Sunsari correspondent reports that about 700 families were displaced due to flood triggered by incessant rainfall in Narsinga, Babiya, Jhokraha, Basantapur and other areas. According to the Sunsari DPO, 150 families were displaced as the swollen Sunsari stream entered into the settlement on Wednesday morning. A large number of security personnel were deployed to rescue the locals to safe places.
Inaruwa Chairman of the Nepal Red Cross Society Ram Prasad Mehata said scores of people are stuck in Basantapur after the Sunsari stream inundated the settlement. “We are trying to rescue the victims to safer places,” he said. Around 50 families at Narsinha-6 are at risk after the village was inundated. Meanwhile, Puja Kumari Mandal of Amduwa-2 went missing when Tengra stream swept her away on Wednesday.
Workers also have started efforts to control erosion in the eastern embankment of Koshi River at Putthegauda. Technicians involved there said the embankment breach is under control now. According to Sub-inspector Raju Bista at Koshi Barrage Police Post, the water flow in the river was recorded at 255,690 cusec on Wednesday evening.
Security personnel recovered a dead body from among 10 people who went missing after Karbgad stream swept away 20 huts in Laha VDC-5 in Dolpa on Monday night. The body of Lal Bahadur Rokaya was recovered from Rakam of Surkhet on Wednesday, police said. The whereabouts of the nine other missing are still unknown.
