Water projects in a bind
DADELDHURA, JUL 20 -
More than two dozen drinking water projects that were started some five years ago are yet to be completed in Dadeldhura, much to the hardship of thousands of residents of this remote district.
Twenty-nine drinking water projects were initiated in various parts of the district in the period with a budget of about Rs. 150 million.
Locals complained the projects were not commissioned even after so long due to financial irregularities in most of them.
Community Drinking Water Project allocated Rs. 10 million for the construction of Guyala Community Drinking Water Project in Rupal VDC five years ago.
“The contractor claimed the water project was over. But we are yet to see water gush out of taps,” said Binod Bhatta, a local.
According to villagers, the Guyala project was passed before completing even a quarter of the work. This is only a case in point. The situation of other projects is also the same. Most of the under-construction water projects have been mired by irregularities.
Meanwhile, an all-party meeting has decided to freeze the bank account of Samdani Water Project citing financial irregularities. The project is being constructed with a financial assistance of the Asian Development Bank.
