Eleven missing, scores displaced

KATHMANDU, JUL 20 -
At least 11 people have gone missing with scores displaced in floods and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall in various parts of the country in the last couple of days.

Ten people at Karapgad settlement in Dolpa’s Laha VDC-5 went missing in a flood that hit the village, sweeping away more than 20 huts on Monday night, police said. The victims were identified as Somay Rokaya, Subidhara Rokaya, Lal Bahadur Rokaya, Manikala Rokaya, Surya Rokaya, Kushal Rokaya, Haridevi, Kanjare Rokaya, Dudhkumari Bohara and Shankalal Bohara.

A child went missing and 200 families were displaced by floods in  Kailali. The VDCs in the southeastern region, including Bhajani, Khailad, Thapapur, Lalbojhi and Narayanpur in the district, were badly hit.

Kailali Chief District Officer Narayan Prasad Bidari said preparations were afoot to launch rescue and relief operation in the flood-hit areas.

Nine families at Chulachuli in eastern hilly district of Ilam were displaced after their houses were damaged by floodwaters in nearby rivers. A huge swathe of farmland has been inundated.

Meanwhile, landslides disrupted vehicular movement in numerous places in Myagdi, Gulmi, Rukum, Dang and Jumla districts. Movement of people and goods has been crippled in the districts.

A man was critically injured in a landslip at Ghamir VDC in Gulmi district. In Rukum’ Khara VDC-5, a school building crumbled in a mudslide.

Meanwhile, People in Kanchanpur and Palpa districts are said to be in high flood risk.



Embankment breach on

INARUWA: Efforts to plug the breach in the eastern embankment of the Koshi river at Pulthegauda area have been affected due to continuous rain. Surging water level at Koshi threatens additional erosion at other sections of the embankment. Tuesday’s water flow reading at Koshi Barrage was at 227,445 cusec.— the highest figure for this year and 65,000 cusec. more than the measurement taken on Aug. 18, 2008, when the embankment at Paschim Kusaha burst open causing an unprecedented disaster.
