Monsoon wreaks havoc across country
KATHMANDU, JUL 19 -
Incessant rain has disrupted vehicular movement in various parts of the country.
A large area of Nepalgunj was waterlogged impeding the movement of traffic as well as the town’s residents. Ganeshpur, Gharbaritol, Surkhet Road, Phultekra, Koriyanpur and Bhrikutinagar areas are badly hit. People in the areas have blamed the Nepalgunj Municipality for their plight. They accused municipal officials of ignoring repeated appeals for building proper sewer lines and levelling the pothole-riddled streets to mitigate inundation risk. Many schools in Nepalgunj were closed on Monday as the rainwater rendered the roads impassable.
Meanwhile, movement of heavy vehicles on Damak-Kerkha section of East-West Highway has been halted as the bridge over the Geuriya river sagged at one end.
Transport service to and from Rukum has been interrupted due to a landslide at Baghkhor Bazar in district headquarters Khalanga. Effort to clear the debris was dampened due to continuous rain. Transportation along the Khalanga-Rukumkot road has also been disrupted due to landslips.
A landslide that took place near Kapurkot area in Salyan district has disrupted the vehicular movement along the Dang-Salyan road, forcing passengers to walk to their destinations.
Continuous rain of the last two days has obstructed highways in various districts in the Far West. Over a dozen arterial roads in the region, including ND Prakash Chataut Highway, KI Singh Highway, Dadeldhura Jogbuda Highway, Jogbuda Daiji Highway and Dadeldhura Melauli Highway.
Nearly a dozen road projects that were passed only recently by District Development Committee Dadeldhura have come a cropper as the continuous rain flooded the newly built tracks. Millions of rupees invested in the ill-timed projects has been wasted.
