Education a dream for visually impaired

BIMAL KHATIWADA

PARBAT, JUL 19 -
Visually impaired Netra Prasad Shrestha—a resident of Katuwachaupari-4 in Parbat district—is deprived of education not because he cannot see but because he is poor. He does odd jobs to support his six-member family putting his aspiration for higher education aside.

Shrestha passed the SLC examination with a 69.63 percent score from Baglung-based Janata Dhan Higher Secondary School four years ago. He has had no financial resource to study further ever since. Shrestha said he had called on various organisations said to be working for the welfare of visually-impaired people for help but to no avail. “I have a dream to study on, but it has been shattered,” he lamented.

“All the time he asks for money for study,” his mother, Til Kumari said. “How can I finance his study anymore when I can hardly feed my family?” the daily wage worker wondered. His wife Anita is unhappy too for his having to quit study after

successfully completing school education.

“He sometimes sleep-talks about further study,”

she said. Shrestha wants to be a doctor if ever he gets a chance to study again.

Poverty bites

BAGLUNG: A dalit

student who topped Baglung district in SLC exam this year is not in a position to study further due to financial constraints.

Suresh Sarki, a student of Narayansthan-based Ganesh Secondary School, got an SLC with

85 percent. Teachers helped him out up to the secondary level. “I want to serve my village as a doctor in the future. I don’t know if my dream will come true,” he shared.

His mother Devi, who is a daily wage worker, said the family cannot afford to send him to a college.
