JUL 16 -
With predictions of an above-average monsoon, nearly 80 percent of the Nepali population who are employed in the agricultural sector must have heaved a sigh of relief.
Last year’s below-average rains led to a food crisis in many districts, with the nation reeling under double-figure inflation rates.
This week’s On Saturday displays the extreme affinity Nepalis have with food in all aspects—be it in cultivation, rituals, or plain consumption. The hardship of the terrain lends a further impetus to this affinity, thus creating an important cultural linkage with food.
We celebrate this affiliation with a photo exhibition that brings together some of Nepal’s best photo-journalists and the UN-World Food Programme. As Richard Ragan, country director for the UN agency says, “This exhibition is a celebration of Nepal’s unique food culture.”
