Madhes–based parties reactivate alliance
- Decry state re-do panel formation
KATHMANDU, JUL 16 -
Against the backdrop of the failure of the major parties to choose a consensual prime ministerial candidate, the four Madhes-based parties on Friday reactivated the Samyukta Madhesi Morcha to take a common position on the formation of new government and lobbying for Madhes issues.
The decision to revive the alliance that had remained dormant for the last 13 months was taken in a meeting of top leaders of Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (Loktantrik), Madhesi Janadhikar Forum, Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party and Sadhbhawna Party held in Singhadurbar. The move is aimed to create pressure for other parties to address the issues of Madhes in the new constitution and institutonalise the presence of the Madhesi parties as the “fourth force” in the country, according to the leaders.
In the meeting, the leaders of the four parties stressed that the new government should be formed under the leadership of the three major parties, but they did not specify the party that should take the helm.
They have agreed to come forth with their position once the major parties fix their prime ministerial candidate.
“We will not claim the leadership of the government in the present circumstances. But, if the major political parties fail to forge consensus, the Madhes-based parties should get a chance to lead the new government,” said TMLP Chairman Mahantha Thakur. Sadbhawana Party Chairman Rajendra Mahato said the Morcha would sit together again and fix its position on the government formation. “We have not yet decided to support any individual party,” he said.
While announcing Morcha’s reactivation, the four parties have expressed commitment to draft the constitution from the Constituent Assembly (CA) within the stipulated time and to provide support to take the peace process to a logical end.
They, however, have objected to the decision of major three parties to set up a state restructuring commission. They said that the formation of such commission was meaningless as the decision on the issue falls under the jurisdiction of the Committee for the Restructuring of the State and Devolution of State Power, reads a joint statement issued by the four parties.
