NC to fish out PM trump card soon

  • To unveil peace roadmap today
POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, JUL 14 -
The major ally of the present coalition Nepali Congress (NC) said on Wednesday that it would decide on the party’s prime ministerial candidate only after studying the strategy of the CPN-UML. The party, however, plans to announce its roadmap for peace and constitution on Thursday.

“We have not reached a conclusion as voices are being raised that the UML’s strategy should be studied before making a decision,” NC Spokesperson Arjun Narsingh KC said after the party’s meeting in Sanepa on Wednesday.

KC informed that the meeting chiefly dwelt on the party’s preparation for the upcoming general convention and held a brief discussion about the issue of government formation.

“The meeting will discuss government formation and prime minister’s candidacy tomorrow,” said KC, adding, “We will reach a conclusion by Friday.”

It is learnt that the NC delayed its decision on prime ministerial candidate following a telephone conversation between NC Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel and UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal on Wednesday afternoon. According to a source, Khanal urged the NC leader to focus on the formation of a consensus government instead of the one based on majority.

NC Parliamentary Party leader Poudel, senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba and General Secretary Kul Bahadur Gurung are vying for the prime ministerial post.

The party on Sunday had formed a seven-member committee comprising senior leaders, including the party’s representatives in the Special Committee, Ram Sharan Mahat and Minendra Rijal. NC leaders said that the roadmap would also get UML consent. NC decided to prepare its own roadmap after the Maoists floated their proposal on integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants. Unhappy with the Maoist proposal, NC said the policy paper was “distorted” and “against the past agreements”.
