Advancing monsoon boosts hopes
KATHMANDU, JUL 11 -
This year’s monsoon has gained pace despite its weak start about a month ago. Monsoon has advanced throughout the country, according to Meteorological Forecasting Division.
On Saturday night, the eastern and central regions along with most parts of the western region received good rainfall.
Suman Regmi, a MFD weatherman, said the central region received heavy rainfall compared with other parts of the country. West had failed to see adequate rainfall even three weeks after the start of this year’s monsoon. It also witnessed thundershowers on Saturday night, MFD said.
On Saturday, Pokhara received maximum rainfall measuring 267.6 millimetres among all meteorological stations across the country, MFD informed. Meterological stations located in mid-west and west (Dhangadhi, Dang and Simra) saw rainfall measuring 36.9 mm, 25.5 mm and 162.5 mm respectively on the same day.
Similarly, Kathmandu received 58.1 mm of rainfall on Saturday. “It will still take a couple of days to see monsoon in full size,” Regmi said.
Saturday’s rain brought a sigh of relief to farmers in many parts of the country who were eagerly awaiting the monsoon rains.
A report from Kavre said, locals of Bhakundebeshi are elated at heavy rainfall on Saturday, reviving their hopes of good cultivation after more than three years. Over 20,000 hectares of land was left barren due to lack of rain in the district.
“Earlier, we were not able to plant crops. But now we are happy to get enough rainfall for crop plantation,” said a local farmer TP Sharma. Interestingly, the government had declared Bhakundebeshi as drought area and provided compensation for farmers. Meanwhile, heavy downpour has crippled normal life in some districts.
A report from Dang said, five-year-old Kale Gharti has gone missing after the flooded Ganaha River swept him away on Saturday night. A girl who was swept away by the river was rescued on Sunday afternoon.
In Rautahat, flooding in Lalbakaiya River triggered by heavy rainfall for the last two days, inundated more than 25 houses.
