Nepali migrant workers win protracted legal battle
DOHA (QATAR), JUL 07 -
A long legal battle has ultimately paid off about three dozen Nepali migrant workers after the High Court of Qatar gave its verdict in their favour recently.
Thirty-seven Nepalis working for a Sanaya-based company went to the court as they were deprived of salaries, perks and other benefits. According to the victims, the company had not paid them for four to six months.
“The manager threatened to imprison us when we demanded our salary and air ticket to return to Nepal. It’s been a long battle but we are happy that we got our rights,” said Yamlal Kandel of Dang in Nepal. Each of the victims received up to Rs. 200,000 as salary and air ticket from the company.
In its final verdict, the Qatari High Court ordered the company to provide the migrant workers with their salaries, perks and air ticket, which was obeyed.
Aided by the Nepali Embassy in Qatar, the victims had appealed to the Labour Court, which asked the company to provide the migrant workers with their due entitlements. It forwarded the case to the Labour Department and subsequently the High Court when the company turned down its ruling. The victims have been staying at a camp in the company, waiting for eject papers necessary for their return.
Ambassador Suryanath Mishra said the legal victory of 37 Nepalis had set a precedent for hundreds of others who were denied their rights. “Some of the companies here torture Nepalis in the belief that the workers will return home abandoning their pays and perks. This case has helped boost morale of others deprived of their rights,” he said.
