Air service closure hits Taplejung folk

POST REPORT

TAPLEJUNG, JUL 07 -
The people of Taplejung and adjoining districts have been greatly affected as Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) halted its service in Suketar Airport citing deplorable condition of the runway.

NAC, the only service operator here, said it was compelled to halt the services during the rainy months. “The plane cannot take off and land in the

rainy season as the runway is full of water,” said Nargunj Thalang, the station manager. The airport employees said Suketar Airport has failed to draw the due attention of the government authorities.

“Although the airport was constructed some four decades ago, it does not have a concrete and wide runway. The government is not paying attention to the people living here,” said an employee preferring anonymity. Earlier, Yeti Airlines, a private air company, operated flights here. But it halted the air service citing the runway’s pitiable condition. Obstr-uction of the air service has hit the people of Taplejung, Panchthar, Terhathum and Sankhuwasabha districts.

Air service is the only reliable means of transport in the area since the road transport remains largely obstructed during the rainy season. NAC had been providing service twice a week. It operates its service to Kathmandu and Biratnagar from Taplejung.
