NEPSE in decline again

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, JUL 04 -
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) started the week on a weak note, losing 6.22 points on Sunday. The benchmark index settled at 464.69 points when trading closed.

It was expected that the market would take an upward trend with the resignation of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal; and while the market responded positively the next day of the resignation, the market could not sustain the growth the next day.

Dismal performances by major sub-indices including banking, development bank and finance company pushed the NEPSE down even though the hydropower and hotel and insurance groups saw growth.

The others group that witnessed the biggest rise last Thursday saw a sharp decline in its sub-index by 19.97 points followed by the banking sector with 6.4 points. Finance companies and development banks saw a decline in their sub-indices of 2.52 and 0.32 points respectively.

The rise in the index of the hydropower sector by 30.43 stopped the freefall in the capital market. The hotel and insurance sectors saw their respective sub-indices rise by 4.35 and 0.29 points respectively.

Among banks, Everest Bank lost the highest Rs. 101 per share while Laxmi Bank gained Rs. 8 per share, the highest among the banks seeing a price rise of their shares. Among the development banks, Pashupati Development Bank lost the highest of Rs. 156 per share but Chhimek Bikas Bank gained Rs. 10 per share from Sunday's trading, the highest. Birgunj Finance was the biggest loser with Rs. 23 per share among the finance companies while Crystal Finance gained Rs. 15 the highest in the gainers' list.

In the hydropower group, Butwal Power Company surpassed all in gaining Rs. 67 per share while National Hydropower lost Rs. 1 per share. Alliance Insurance incurred the biggest loss of Rs. 6 per share in the insurance group.
