Humla teachers live on borrowed money

JAYA BAHADUR ROKAYA

HUMLA, JUL 03 -
Teachers in this remote district currently have no option but to borrow money to manage two square meals a day as the government had not paid them for the past four months.

Dharma Bahadur Thapa, a teacher at Suryadaya Higher Secondary School, is compelled take leave and visit friends and relatives and borrow money to support his family. “How long wil this go on? I am sick and tired of borrowing money,” Thapa told the Post.

Hundreds of teachers face a similar hardship after the government failed to release their salary for four months.

No different is the plight of Khadka Bahadur Shahi, a teacher at Sallaghari Proposed Secondary School. He complained that other government employees get their salary in time, but they are yet to get theirs even as the fiscal year is about to end.

“How can we survive as our entire family depend on us?,” questioned Shahi, who has reached the District Education Office (DEO) in the district headquarters with high hopes of getting paid for his work. He walked for four days to reach the headquarters. Like him, most of the other teachers are also in the headquarters to visit the DEO, but in vain.

The compulsion to stay in the district headquarters and spending some extra cash has added to the teachers’ woes. “We have spent a large sum of money for accommodation and food. However, we are yet to receive our salary,” they said.

Admitting that teachers in the district have not been paid for the past four months, District Education Officer Dharmajeet Shahi said the centre has not released the salary despite repeated requests.
