Sino aid to broom Valley
KATHMANDU, JUL 02 -
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) will get 108 vehicles and 4000 containers meant to collect and dispose of the Capital’s garbage as part of Chinese assistance. KMC officials said the coming vehicles and containers will be a boon for timely collection of garbage.
Rabinman Shrestha, Divisional Chief of Environment Management Department at KMC, said ships ferrying the vehicles and containers will reach Kolkata port on July 7. “We are in dire need of new vehicles as the population of Kathmandu is increasing by the day and so is garbage,” said Shrestha.
According to Shrestha, each of the 4,000 containers has 240 litres capacity and all will be put across the Capital.
The 108 vehicles will include six big garbage trucks, 50 hermetic self discharging garbage trucks, five compression refuse collectors, 30 self discharging and loading garbage trucks, among others. Vehicles of KMC have to ply at least three times a day to collect garbage in the capital. “With the operation of these vehicles, garbage can be ferried at a time,” said Shrestha
KMC officials are also hoping the new vehicles will keep the environment clean when they replace the rickety old vehicles that have been running for the last 20 years. KMC was unable to replace them “due to lack of enough budget”.
KMC had requested the Chinese government through the Ministry of Local Development for the assistance. Though the Chinese embassy sent an official letter last year granting approval for the request, the arrival of the vehicles was delayed due to ‘technical reasons’. The department will donate the older vehicles to different municipalities outside the valley to collect garbage. KMC currently has altogether 100 vehicles for garbage purpose.
