Journo freed after 30 hrs in captivity

POST REPORT

PYUTHAN, JUL 02 -
Pyuthan-based radio journalist Keshav Bohara, who was abducted by an unidentified group three days ago, was freed on Thursday night.

Bohara came into police contact soon after he was freed at Gorusinge along East-West Highway, Kapilvastu district, at around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday. The freed journo went straight to Area Police Post Gorusinge for security.

The central mission team of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, representatives of National Human Rights Commission regional office and local journalists reached the police post and took Bohara to Pyuthan on Friday morning.

Police quoted Bohara as saying that six abductors, including a woman, were involved in his abduction and frequently asked why he had written the news accusing UCPN (Maoist) of seizing land belonging to Swargadwari Ashram.

Bohara said the abductors took him inside a vehicle for 31 hours and did not provide food during the captivity.

Bohara’s friends said he had been receiving death threats from an unknown caller ever since he broadcast a news report that the Maoists had not returned the seized land of the ashram. Bohara is the vice president of Pyuthan-based Radio Mandavi.

Meanwhile, Freedom Forum has alleged the UCPN (Maoist) for Bohara’s abduction.

Taranath Dahal, chairman of  Freedom Forum said in a statement,”there seems a clear involvement of the Maoists in the incident.” It says the incident has served as a testimony that Nepal is becoming a danger zone for journalists to exercise their freedom of expression.
