Migrant workers need attention, say experts
KATHMANDU, JUN 28 -
Officials of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC)-Qatar, Solidarity Center-Qatar and GEFONT, a trade union organisation, on Monday stressed Nepal should enlighten migrant workers before they leave for Qatar.
Cases of runaways and accidents take place in Qatar due to lack of information regarding local laws, traffic rules and knowledge of Qatar’s cultural and geographical situation. “Workers without information about a destination country have created a big problem in Qatar,” said Fahad Ahmed Al Mohammadi, Head of the Labour Rights Unit of Qatar National Human Rights Committee (NHRC).
At the programme organised by GEFONT, Mohammadi said there are many workers undocumented and who have been imprisoned for deserting their jobs. “Nepal should streamline the recruiting agencies and warn them not to resort to illegal ways,” he said.
Boyko Atanasov, Country programme director of Solidarity Center-Qatar said migrant workers need attention. “They must be informed about the laws of the destination country before their departure.” Acknowledging the problem, Nepali officials said they are trying to educate the migrant workers and will undertake it as a massive campaign. “The Government is not able to percolate the grassroots due to technical problems,” said S. Devkota, Director of Foreign Employment Promotion Board.
Pushkar Nepal, legal and investigation officer of Department of Foreign Affairs, said an analysis of the complaints filed in Qatar shows 75 percent of misdeeds take place in Qatar and the rest 25 percent due to the Nepal government’s weakness.
