Bajura reels under acute food crisis
BAJURA, JUN 28 -
The District Food Security Network (DFSN), Bajura, has said most of the VDCs in the district are reeling under an acute shortage of foodstuff. It also urged authorities concerned, including the World Food Programme, to take immediate action to avert a famine.
Publishing its survey report in the Bajura district headquarters Martadi on Sunday, DFSN said most families in 25 of the total of 27 VDCs in the district are facing a food crisis.
“Most of the locals in these VDCs have no food to eat in the recent days. They are compelled to take meals evry alternate day as they do not have foodstuff in store,” said Bishwaraj Pandit, an officer at the District Agriculture Development Office. He is also a representative member of the network.
DFSN is an authorised government agency that analyses the situation of food security. The network has categorised the VDCs into four groups on the basis of food scarcity. It has included 16 VDCs in group C and D where the shortage is acute.
The network’s report says some VDCs including Toli, Kuldevmandu, Gotri, Brhmatola, Jugada, Kolti, Kotila, Barhabisa and Pandusen, which rarely had food shortage in the past, are now reeling under the shortage.
The DFSN says that 80 percent decline in the domestic food production this year and unavailability of foodstuff in the Kolti Depot of Nepal Food Corporation are the main causes for the scarcity in the district.
