MPs call for swift action on paper row
KATHMANDU, JUN 23 -
Lawmakers on Wednesday stressed the government should be serious about Indian authorities holding back 1,000 metric tonnes of newsprint imported by Kantipur Publications.
Speaking before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the parliament, they said the government should take measures for the release of newsprint from Kalkata port. India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has taken control of newsprint imported from Canada and South Korea and stopped its shipment to Nepal since the last 26 days.
CPN-UML lawmaker Rabindra Adhikari said the obstacle to import was against the Nepal-India transit treaty. He demanded the committee grill the secretaries of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Commerce. PAC Chairman Ram Krishna Yadav postponed the committee meeting after lawmakers demanded discussion on the issue. Lawmakers Prakash Chandra Lohani, Deep Kumar Upadhyay and Keshab Prasad Manaili opposed the move and demanded immediate discussion saying the issue of newsprint was serious.
Yadav then scheduled the PAC meeting for Thursday morning to discuss the issue. Rastriya Janashakti Party lawmaker Lohani said the House committee will make its decision after discussion with the foreign and commerce ministries.
