Govt to adopt child promotion scheme
KATHMANDU, JUN 23 -
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on Wednesday said his government is adopting a child-friendly local governance system to ensure children’s protection and promotion.
Addressing the third meeting of South Asia Initiative to End Violence against Children (SAIEVAC), Nepal said issues concerning children, including violence and abuse, often transcend national borders and therefore South Asian governments are cooperating in key issues in the region through the SAARC and global mechanisms and directives.
The meeting was attended by ministers dealing with children’s issues and child representatives from SAARC nations. It was focussed on endorsing the decision to establish SAIEVAC as a strong regional centre to address violence against children so that minors across south Asia enjoy their right to life free of violence, abuse, exploitation, neglect and discrimination. The meeting decided on establishing an SAIEVAC Governing Board comprising representatives of the government, children, international agencies and civil society to supervise and oversee its work. It also decided to establish a SAIEVAC secretariat in Kathmandu.
“The SAARC nations are not only pioneering a new approach to regional cooperation but also striving to to end violence against children,” said Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare Sarv Dev Prasad Ojha.
SAIEVAC intends to implement a work plan to end violence against children at regional and national levels with their meaningful participation so that they can prevent and monitor violence against children, make recommendations and be involved in decision-making processes for actions to end violence.
