2011 the year of the census
KATHMANDU, JUN 22 -
The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) on Tuesday announced June 22, 2011 as census day. It also said census will be carried out for 10 days starting June 17, 2011.
The announcement was made here in a seminar on ‘population and housing census 2011.’ An official website (www.census.gov.np) was also launched in the programme to provide up-to-date information on the forthcoming census, which can be accessed in Nepali and English languages. The 2011 census, which will be the 11th in the history of Nepal and marks 100 years of census practice in the country, will hold significance in that it is the first after massive political changes in the country.
Compared to the last census in 2001, the 2011 census is touted to be more accurate as it will use the Global Positioning System (GPS).
Officials conducting the census will make use of two questionnaires — one for household information and the other for individual information. The former information will be gathered from April to May next year and the latter from June 17 to 27. The questionnaires will be based on subjects like maternal mortality, third gender and GPS coordinates.
“We will mobilise about 44,000 personnel for the census, including 8,500 field supervisors and 34,000 enumerators (40 percent female),” said CBS Director General Uttam Narayan Malla. Officials believe
the census is important to mark changes that Nepal has undergone in recent years. They believe that it will provide an authentic base for prospective federalism and state restructuring.
“The upcoming census will be significant for Nepal as it will give a clear picture of the country’s situation after the (Maoist) conflict. It will also be a base for setting Millennium Development Goals and restructuring of the state,” said Ian McFarlane, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) representative in Nepal.
Packaging of census materials will begin from July and will be dispatched to the districts. The CBS estimates that over nine million pages of forms and 200 tons of other census materials will be dispatched to the enumeration areas.
The total expenses of resources required for the census is estimated at US $ 24 million which will be borne by the government and various international agencies.
