No decision yet on PM candidate, says Deuba
KATHMANDU, JUN 21 -
Senior Nepali Congress leader and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on Monday said no decision has been taken in the party on who should lead the party in case it gets an opportunity to lead the government.
“The only decision we made was that the party will take all decisions, be it on the current political situation, the peace process or constitution writing, on a consensus basis and as per the party’s established norms,” Deuba told the Post. He was referring to the minutes of Sunday’s meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee. The minutes state that “everything will be decided in accordance with the party’s tradition of consensus and existing statute and rules.”
Some NC leaders had claimed on Sunday that there has been an “unofficial” decision to pick NC Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Poudel as the candidate for the next prime minister.
The leadership issue has gained momentum in the party, especially after the May 28 agreement, where the prime minister has committed to resign “without delay” to break the current political stalemate.
The issue of NC selecting its candidate for the prime minister’s post has been watched with interest by many as it is likely to impact on what some NC leaders say, the “real unity” within the party, especially between the party’s erstwhile two factions: NC and the NC (Democratic), the latter then led by Deuba.
Though the two factions united in 2007, disputes remain unaddressed in the party’s district-level structures, where there are still two parallel groups of both the erstwhile factions.
In this context, Deuba said it was time the party “stressed more on consensus” in taking important decisions.
The faction supporting Poudel’s candidacy has been saying that a decision on the NC’s candidate should be based on the party’s statute, which states that the Parliamentary Party leader leads the party in the government.
