Road a boon for these rural folk
TERHATHUM, JUN 21 -
Half a dozen village development committees (VDCs) are witnessing a fall in the prices of consumer goods after a road connected Hamarjung VDC of the district.
The District Development Committee (DDC) constructed the road under the Rural Agricultural Road Programme. Villagers of Panchakanya, Phakchamaraa, Dagpa and Okhhre, besides Hamarjung, have benefitted from the road connection. Dham Bahadur Karki, the secretary of the market management committee at Shukrabare market of Hamarjung, said people have been heaving a sigh of relief after the construction of the road. “Economic activities are also picking up with the road connection,” he said.
Moreover, the local people now have access to the market for their produce, while the road access has cut down the transportation cost of essential goods.
Lok Bahadur Budhathoki, manager of Chhathar Milk Producer’s Co-operative at Shukrabare, said the cost of transporting goods almost halved with the use of vehicles. Earlier, porters used to carry essentials to the areas. Local products of the areas including ginger, green vegetables, potatoes, milk and cardamom, which used to be consumed locally in the past, are now being marketed to major markets in the eastern Tarai as well.
With an overwhelming number of locals involved in the trade
of local products, Narayan
Subba, chief of the market management committee expressed hope that the living standards of the local people would get a boost in the days to come.
The road link has also given a rise to the number of buildings being constructed around the market area. This has ultimately led to the rise in the real estate prices.
Khadga Bahadur Chapagain, a local development officer, said the rural economy is booming given the exchange of products by vehicles arriving with daily essentials from the eastern Tarai and returning with a load of local products.
Local denizens largely import rice, salt, edible oil and other consumer goods from the Tarai.
