Poudel is Cong’s unofficial pick for PM
KATHMANDU, JUN 20 -
The Nepali Congress on Sunday “unofficially” picked Vice-President Ram Chandra Poudel as the party’s Prime Ministerial candidate.
The Central Working Committee meeting of the party, which concluded on Sunday, decided not to immediately make the decision public at the request of senior party leader Sher Bahadur Deuba. Deuba was one of the contenders for the top post.
According to NC sources, Deuba has also agreed to support the decision.
On Sunday, the party’s acting Vice-President Sushil Koirala also hinted he would support Poudel.
“As Koirala will be on a three-week tour, the central committee took the decision in haste,” an NC leader said.
The decision will be made public only after a consensus among other parties is had, according to an agreement between Poudel and Deuba.
The party also decided to hold talks with other political parties, including the UCPN (Maoist), CPN-UML and other Madhes-based parties, from Monday on the NC leadership issue.
In the meeting, Koirala said NC should not publicise the party’s decision on the prime ministerial candidate without prior consultations with other parties. “We should not hurry at the moment. The unity of the party is more crucial than other issues,” he said.
However, NC stalwart Ram Chandra Poudel said the party should make public the candidate immediately while touting himself as the prime ministerial candidate.
