Members seek convention
KATHMANDU, JUN 19 -
A majority of Politburo members of the UCPN (Maoist) on Saturday urged the party leadership to call a general convention or a national assembly or a “cadres gathering” to prepare the party’s new strategy and to make the party’s organisational structure strong and effective.
The Maoists have not organised a general convention for the past 18 years and a national convention for the past 10 years. The main opposition is only organising “cadres gatherings” in recent years to take suggestions from the grassroots level.
Over 25 out of the 45-member politburo members urged the party to sort out “several organisational problems” at the state and district-level through a national convention. According to Maoist leaders, “problems” include membership distribution and responsibility review.
“The party has realised that the organisational structure needs to be made systematic and effective. We are discussing holding a general convention or any other gathering for that matter,” politburo member Dhamendra Bastola told the Post.
Some Politburo members complained that as some districts have more than 500 members, working has become difficult. The Maoists’ unification with some fringe parties has made the organisational structure further complicated. The Politburo members also demanded a general convention to formulate a new plan of action for the party.
They said the party is in a confusion after the 12-point understanding four years ago with the government.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, Maoist Spokesperson Dinanath Sharma said members also demanded that a national government be formed under the Maoist leadership.
