Embankment breach puts fauna in peril
SUNSARI, JUN 18 -
A large area inside the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (KTWR) is waterlogged due to a breach in the eastern embankment of Koshi River. The breach occurred at Dharahara Tapan of Prakashpur VDC five days earlier.
KTWR official Suresh Chaudhary said that the breach has eroded nearly 30 meters of the lower section of the embankment Continuous rain since the last two days has intensified the flood inside the reserve, threatening many animals and their habitat.
Hari Bhattarai, chairman of Dharahara Community Forest Users’ Committee, said the breach was triggered after the Indian side plugged the Koshi waters in an attempt to divert the river’s course towards the west. He said that the breach was getting larger by the day.
The KTWR authority has written to the chief of India’s Koshi Project asking the latter seal the breach immediately. The embankment could burst at any time if the breach is not mended at the earliest, said Shivnarayan Sah, acting conservation officer of the KTWR.
Superintendent of Police Bhupal Kumar Bhandari said that police personnel have been mobilised at the breach site. He added that the work of closing the breach will be initiated in close coordination with the Indian side.
